Debbie Donnelly-Owner

For many years, Debbie Donnelly dreamed of living in the mountains and running her own business. Late in November of 2006 an opportunity came her way to purchase most of the inventory of a quilt shop going out of business in La Veta, Colorado. In January of 2007, the Mountain Valley Quilt Shop first opened its doors on the south end of La Veta on Oak Street, which is also called Highway 12, or The Highway of Legends. Mountain Valley Quilt Shop is still on The Highway of Legends, but it is now located at #202 South Main Street - right in the middle of town! The shop has a variety of different fabrics, accessories, unique bags, hand-made scarves and other notions for buying and sewing. On display at the shop are many of the quilts made by Debbie and other local artists. These include Art Quilts, traditional quilts and other decorative quilts. Some of Debbie’s quilts have been on display at the Tims Art Quilt Studio and Gallery (which is right around the corner), The Affair of the Heart Quilt Show in Liberal, Kansas, and the Ogalla Quilt Festival in Dimmit, Texas. Debbie has studied quilting with several professional quilters and quilt artists in Flagstaff, Arizona, Chicago, Illinois and Houston, Texas. In fact, a class she once took from Ricky Tims in Arizona led her to La Veta....

In 2006, Debbie's quilts had been accepted for a show at the Tims Studio and Gallery in La Veta. After visiting the small mountain town - Debbie was hooked! The picturesque beauty of the area and the friendly members of the community immediately spoke to her heart, and she moved to La Veta that very same year.

Debbie teaches her own classes at the shop, as well as offering classes taught by local and non-local artists and instructors.  (Please be sure and check the website's list of Classes and Workshops.) Debbie has also regularly scheduled a  'Sit & Sew' once-a-week which has become quite popular with the local quilters.

Shop hours are Monday -  Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM, and Sunday 12:00PM to 3:00PM. The Town of La Veta is a small mountain community on the south side of La Veta Pass, and situated at the mouth of the Cuchara River Valley. The town is primarily composed of artists, ranchers, and a few merchants. Just over 7,000 feet and surrounded by breath-taking scenery, LaVeta boasts spectacular views of the Spanish Peaks, and of the Sangre de Cristo mountains - and 300 plus days of sunshine annually! At the south end of town are the foothills of the west Spanish Peak and the Great Dikes which are large vertical granite formations which spiral out from the Peaks. In May of 2006, the San Luis and Rio Grande Railroad retuned to La Veta for the first time in over 50 years. Daily excursion trips from Alamosa to La Veta are scheduled beginning in late May and continuing through October. This is the first regularly scheduled passenger train to cross the 9,242-foot La Veta pass since 1953.
